| A quick article about today's downfall in quality of games. |

Many people think that the more popular a game is, the better it is.
Well, this might be the case for single player games but definitely not the case for the majority of multiplayer games.
Nowadays, advertisements define the big games. Take for example Bigpoint games, especially the early ones; I was never able to play any of them more than a few moments; Graphics would make my eyes ache, they had no story, their system was based on who-will-pay-more, there was no quality in communication and there was no real competition; no fun. A total zero in all aspects. Still, these games were full of players. Why ? Heavy advertisement is the answer.
Which moves us to the next chapter. Where you see heavy advertisement, 9 out of 10 times it means that the game is configured to be a money maker. Of course, game owners have to pay for a lot of things so monetization is expected. However there should be a fair model. World of Warcraft is a good example of fair monetization (although eventually spoiled, from the users this time).
While we are at World of Warcraft, let's look closer at it. Because this type of games were the ones that killed off MUDs. People went for the nice graphics, the endless options and the mass competition! They left behind good old MUDs which had no graphics, were troublesome to navigate, difficult to learn and their options were finite. But what they really earned ? I will tell you what they surely lost: They lost ROLEPLAYING (and cash). I doubt you will find any quality roleplay in any of the MMOs. The best you can hope, is someone to dedicate some time to teach you now in order to use you later and.. that is all!
There are however more victims, not only MUDS. Recently, the top victims are called Indie browser games. Are you an independed browser game developer ? Well, then you know what I am saying. People are leaving small indie browser games for these big, corporate games. They want something bigger and better and they are willing to pay it. So OFF with the INDIES!
Where this will lead ? In WORSE games. The years pass and still people memorize the first SIMCITY or CIVILIZATION or POPULUS. Wait.. how old are you ? You never heard of them ? Probably you have, because most young people won't lose their time over reading an article. In today's time the following quote is more true than ever:
"Programming today is a race between software engineers striving to build bigger and better idiot-proof programs, and the Universe trying to produce bigger and better idiots. So far, the Universe is winning."
So, create EASY games! For the MASS! Make them happy!
The rest of you, who want smart, quality games, OFF with YOU. Just like we went OFF with the MUDs. Just like we are going OFF with the INDIES!
At the end of the day, human beings able to think, able of critical thought, should realize that they also need to act.
If you are incapable of understanding the whole meaning, start with a simple step; Stop judging games based on their popularity. |
